Improper Bite (Malocclusion)

An improper bite refers to any misalignment of the teeth between the upper and lower jaws, including by crooked or crowded teeth. These misalignments can cause chewing problems, abnormal wear and tear to the teeth, as well as damage to tongue and cheek tissues.

Understanding Crooked and Crowded Teeth

At Breathe Correct in Denver treatments for crooked teeth or crowded teeth can address the following problems, including:

Overbite/Underbite

This is the most common type of malocclusion we see. It is generally caused by a misalignment of the jaw that forces the lower teeth to land either in front of the upper teeth (underbite) or too far behind the upper teeth (overbite).

Crowding

Crowding of the teeth forms during childhood, when some teeth push through the gums too close together and others too far apart. Crowded teeth can lead to increased dental problems, sleep disorders, and even speech issues depending on the nature of the crowding.

Crossbite

A crossbite happens when the teeth or jaws are misaligned horizontally, causing the teeth to land out of alignment. When this happens, teeth may be damaged over time. Your cheeks and gums also get caught in the misalignment, resulting in frequent bites and scrapes that can lead to sores and infections.

Open Bite

An open bite happens when crooked or crowded teeth at the back of the mouth connect before the rest of the teeth are allowed to close properly. Open bite issues can lead to breathing problems and poor quality sleep, as well as difficulty with chewing, swallowing, and speech.

How Do We Diagnose Crooked Teeth Treatments?

At Breathe Correct in Colorado Springs and Denver crooked teeth treatment and crowded teeth correction begin with a detailed examination by one of our trained specialists. Below is a summary of the key steps in the diagnostic process:

Medical History and Symptom Analysis

New patients complete a thorough medical history, including an assessment of symptoms and a sleep-and-breathing questionnaire. The sleep and breathing questionnaire is a crucial step in any treatment of the teeth and jaw that separates Breathe Correct from traditional orthodontics.

Accurate assessment of a patient’s full medical history (not just current symptoms and their severity) is critical for understanding and properly treating their breathing pathways. That way, our specialists can assess alternative treatments depending on your potential health concerns.

3D X-ray of the Upper Airway and Jaws

Using state-of-the-art, low radiation digital 3D X-Rays known as CBVT (Cone Beam Volumetric Tomography), our crooked teeth experts in Denver and Colorado Springs will be able to clearly see the upper airway, including the nasal airway, jawbones, and other structures beginning at the lower neck.

We use special software to calculate the airway volume, locate airway restrictions and help determine the optimum position of the jaws. This information is used to guide the design of proprietary oral appliances that will help correct structural issues.

Head and Neck Exam

At Breathe Correct, we perform a comprehensive exam of the head, neck, nasal passage, temporomandibular joint also known asTMJ, and mouth, including a series of digital photographs, to verify structural issues presented by the 3D X-Ray.

Home Sleep Test

As part of our treatment procedures for crooked and crowded teeth, Denver and Colorado Springs patients have the option to take a Home Sleep Test (HST) which is read by a board-certified sleep physician. If there is a positive diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea, the sleep physician will write a prescription confirming the existence of OSA and the treatment recommendations.

A formal diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea can only be done by a board-certified sleep physician. Even without a positive OSA diagnosis, patients often choose to go into treatment to help with orthodontic, SDB symptoms, TMJ dysfunction, or other structural and dental issues.

Customized Treatment

We offer a variety of treatments based on the specific diagnosis, including:

  • Clear aligners
  • Orthodontic braces
  • Specialty TMD appliances
  • Orofacial myofunctional therapy
  • Frenectomy (for tongue and lip ties)
  • Removable arch expansion appliances
  • Mandibular repositioning devices (also called mandibular advancement devices)

Payment Options

Prices for your treatment will vary based on age and diagnosis. Unfortunately, we cannot take Medicare, Medicaid, or Medical Insurance. Dental and orthodontic insurance benefits may apply; we are an out-of-network provider.
